TL;DR: When your AC won’t turn on, start with the four checks you can do safely: verify the thermostat is set to COOL with the temperature below room temp, check the circuit breaker, look for a tripped condensate float switch, and confirm the outdoor disconnect hasn’t been pulled. If all four check out, the most likely culprit is a failed capacitor or a refrigerant issue, both of which need a licensed technician.
You set the thermostat to 72, heard a click, and then nothing. No hum from the outdoor unit, no air from the vents, just silence and a house that keeps getting warmer. Before you assume the worst, there are four checks any homeowner can run in under ten minutes. Most no-start calls turn out to be one of these. The ones that aren’t are almost always a capacitor or a control issue, and those need a technician with the right tools.
Here is how to work through it, in order.
Is the thermostat actually calling for cooling?
A thermostat set to the wrong mode is the single most common reason an AC won’t respond. Check that the system switch is set to COOL (not HEAT, not AUTO-only, not OFF), and that the set temperature is at least 2-3 degrees below the current room temperature. If the thermostat display is blank or dim, replace the batteries before anything else. Most programmable and smart thermostats run on AA or AAA batteries that die without warning.
If the display is on and the mode is correct, try lowering the set point by 5 degrees and waiting 3 minutes. Some thermostats have a built-in delay of 3-5 minutes after a setting change to protect the compressor from short-cycling. That delay is normal.
Also check that the fan setting is on AUTO, not ON. If the fan is set to ON, air will blow from the vents even when the compressor isn’t running, which can make it feel like the AC is working when it isn’t actually cooling.
Did a breaker trip?
A tripped breaker is the second thing to check, and it takes about 60 seconds. Your electrical panel will have a dedicated double-pole breaker labeled something like “AC,” “Condenser,” or “Air Handler.” A tripped breaker sits in a middle position, neither fully on nor fully off. Reset it by pushing it firmly to OFF first, then back to ON.
If the breaker trips again within a few minutes of resetting, stop there. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from an electrical fault in the equipment. Repeated resets can damage the compressor or create a fire hazard. Call a technician at that point rather than forcing the breaker.
Note that central AC systems often have two breakers: one for the outdoor condenser and one for the indoor air handler. Check both.

Is the condensate float switch tripped?
This one surprises most homeowners. Your air handler has a drain pan underneath it that collects condensation. Inside that pan (or on the drain line) is a small float switch. When the pan fills with water because the drain line is clogged, the float rises and cuts power to the system entirely. It is a safety feature designed to prevent water damage.
If your AC stopped working and you notice water pooling around the air handler, a clogged condensate drain is a likely cause. You can sometimes clear a minor clog by pouring a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access port (a capped PVC fitting near the air handler). Wait 30 minutes and check whether the float drops and the system restarts.
If the pan is overflowing or you see signs of water damage around the unit, shut the system off at the thermostat and call for service. A backed-up condensate line that has been running for days can cause ceiling or drywall damage. Is the outdoor disconnect closed?
Every central AC system has a disconnect box mounted on the exterior wall near the condenser. It looks like a small gray or beige electrical box. Inside is either a pull-out block or a breaker. If someone pulled the disconnect for a previous service call and didn’t replace it, the outdoor unit has no power.
Open the box and check that the disconnect block is seated fully (if it’s a pull-out type) or that the breaker inside is in the ON position. If the block looks burned or the contacts are corroded, don’t reinstall it. That’s a technician call.
Why is my AC humming but not starting?
If you can hear the outdoor unit trying to start (a hum or buzz) but the fan blade isn’t spinning, a failed run capacitor is the most likely cause. The capacitor is a cylindrical component inside the condenser cabinet that stores an electrical charge and gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. When it fails, the motor hums under load but can’t overcome the starting torque.
Capacitors hold a significant electrical charge even when the unit is powered off. Do not open the condenser cabinet or touch any internal components. This is a technician-only repair. The good news: capacitor replacement is one of the faster, less expensive AC repairs, typically completed in a single visit. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that keeping your AC well-maintained extends equipment life and avoids exactly these kinds of component failures.
Other technician-only causes of a no-start include:
- Contactor failure: The contactor is a relay that sends power to the compressor when the thermostat calls for cooling. A burned or stuck contactor means the signal never reaches the compressor.
- Low refrigerant: If refrigerant has leaked to the point where the low-pressure safety switch trips, the system shuts down to protect the compressor. You may notice ice on the refrigerant line or the unit running briefly then stopping.
- Failed control board: Less common, but a faulty control board in the air handler can prevent the system from completing its startup sequence.
- Compressor failure: The most expensive outcome. If the compressor itself has seized, the unit will draw high current and trip the breaker repeatedly.

What should you do if none of the checks fix it?
If you’ve confirmed the thermostat is set correctly, both breakers are on, the condensate float isn’t tripped, and the outdoor disconnect is closed, the problem is inside the equipment. At that point, further diagnosis requires gauges, a multimeter, and training. Attempting to open the condenser cabinet or the air handler to probe components without the right tools risks electrical injury and can void equipment warranties.
