1. Thermostat set to FAN instead of AUTO. If someone switched the fan setting from AUTO to ON, the blower runs continuously even when the compressor is off. The air coming out will be uncooled room air. Set the fan back to AUTO and give the system 15 minutes.

2. Clogged air filter. A filter that is packed with dust restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. Without enough airflow, the coil gets too cold, frost forms on it, and the system stops cooling. Check the filter first. If it is gray and dense, replace it (1-inch filters should be swapped every 30-60 days in a dusty climate). Then turn the system off and let the coil thaw for 2-3 hours before restarting.

3. Tripped breaker on the outdoor unit. Most central AC systems have two breakers: one for the air handler and one for the outdoor condenser.
